This workshop will introduce the subject area of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) to teachers. They will have an opportunity to assess and reflect upon their own emotional intelligence strengths and growth areas. The neuroscience of social and emotional competencies will be explored.  In addition, both the Center for Academic and Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) and International School Counseling Association (ISCA) models for SEL will be explored. Participants will get practice creating integrated social and emotional learning activities that are developmentally appropriate for students.

Objectives
Participants will be able to:

  • Understand the history, definition, and elements of SEL
  • Assess and reflect upon one’s social and emotional intelligence strengths and growth areas
  • Explore the neuroscience of social and emotional competencies
  • Learn about the CASEL and ISCA models for SEL and assess how they relate to the mission of your school
  • Comprehend the process of whole school implementation of SEL
  • Practice using a template to create developmentally appropriate, integrated SEL lessons.
  • Pilot a lesson with peer group and get feedback.

Outline 
Session 1: Exploring Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

  • Learn the definitions of emotional Intelligence and SEL
  • Explore the history of this area of knowledge
  • Assess your own social and emotional strengths and growth areas and discover implications for classroom leaderships
  • Understand the neuroscience related to strong emotions and self-regulation
  • See how mirror neurons relate to self-regulation and co-regulation
  • Apply neuroscience knowledge by practicing empathetic communication

Session 2: Using Models for SEL to Create Developmentally Appropriate Lesson Plans

  • Gain exposure to a mindfulness practice that helps co-regulation
  • Learn about the CASEL model and standards for SEL
  • Compare the CASEL model and your school’s mission, vision and values
  • Explore the ISCA model and standards for SEL
  • Understand the value and process of whole school implementation of SEL
  • Practice using a template to create integrated SEL lessons in a small teach alike group
  • Get peer feedback on lessons created

Trainer’s Profile

Jill S. is an educational consultant and social and emotional learning trainer and coach based out of Bellingham, WA, USA. For most of her 25-year career, she has worked in American and Chinese public and independent schools with young people (ages 2-18) and their families as a teacher, school administrator, and most recently the Early Childhood Social and Emotional Learning Specialist in an international school in China. She holds a master’s degree in educational leadership from DePaul University in Chicago, IL, USA and is a Positive Discipline Association certified trainer.  She is fascinated by the ways that schools acculturate students and enjoys sharing tools to help make classrooms and subsequently cultures places that work for us all!

Didactic instruction, role-play, large and small group discussions, self-assessment, verbal and written reflection, lesson creation and peer teaching
