The schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy, have provided us with inspiration, new ways of thinking about early childhood practices and environments, and thoughtful ways of seeing and listening to children. Indeed, these schools have even introduced us to a new vocabulary when describing our ways of thinking and working with children.
In these workshops we will uncover the history and foundations of the early years practices in Reggio Emilia, and the ways in which these inspirations may lead to innovation in our own early years settings.
Objectives
- To develop an understanding of the foundations and philosophy of the schools of Reggio Emilia
- To examine the basic principles that underpin the work in Reggio Schools
- To understand the cultural influences of this approach
- To re-examine our roles as educators
- To uncover ways of using inspirations from Reggio Emilia, while honoring our own cultures and contexts
Outline
Session 1: Introduction to Reggio Emilia
- Introduction to the city, its history and culture, and how these have affected the pedagogical practices of the schools of Reggio Emilia
- The basic principles:
- The Image of the Child – what is yours?
- The Hundred Languages of Children and what this means for you
- A pedagogy based on Relationship – with others, with materials, and with the world at large
- The Environment as the Third Teacher: The role of Aesthetics and the Stimulation of Materials
- The Role of Time
- Project work/Inquiry/Collaboration – Co-constructing with children
- The Role of Documentation
Session 2: Using inspirations from Reggio Emilia
- The Image of the Child as a starting point: How is your Image of the Child made visible?
- Documentation as a form of study and dialogue: examples from international settings
- Studio spaces, provocations and invitations: The possibilities
- Intentional beauty – setting the stage
- Your role: Teacher as Researcher – observing, wondering, reflecting, and taking action.
Trainer’s Profile
Susan S. is a teacher-educator and author who regularly consults with and supports early years practitioners in Canada, U.S.A, and other countries, both in person and online. She has worked in the field of ECE for 35 years, as a Director, Practicum Advisor, College Instructor, and designs and delivers PD for the Early Years Curriculum Framework in Nova Scotia. Her work is grounded in reflective and responsive practices.
She is the author of 4 books: Emergent Curriculum in Early Childhood Settings (2nd ed.); Unscripted: Emergent Curriculum in Action; Pedagogical Documentation; and Inquiry-Based Early Learning Environments.
Methodology
Workshop will include reflective practice in action, discussion, and sharing of experiences.

Target Audience
All adults who work with young children in early years settings, or work with teachers-in-training for the early years and primary age groups.
