In an emergent curriculum, the child is the central focus of the curriculum. The learning environment becomes the third teacher and adults become facilitators of learning.
The focus of this interactive online workshop is to enhance understanding and application of emergent curriculum principles in developing learning environments for young children.
Objectives
Participants will identify and discuss:
- Emergent curriculum values and principles
- The role of the child in an emergent curriculum setting
- The role of the adult in planning and implementing an emergent curriculum
- Documentation
- Project-based learning
- Planning with children
- Creating a learning environment that supports children’s emergent learning through active play.

Session 1 – 8 June 2020, 9am to 12pm (GMT +8): Overview of Emergent Curriculum
- Emergent curriculum values and principles
- The role of the child in an emergent curriculum setting
Session 2 – 9 June 2020, 9am to 12pm (GMT +8): The Adult Role in Emergent Curriculum
- The adult as a facilitator of learning
- Planning with children
- Project-based learning
Session 3 – 10 June 2020, 9am to 12pm (GMT +8): Documentation Strategies
- Documentation strategies of learning and show-casing learning
- Documenting progress
- Documenting learning activities
- Documenting to build on past experiences
Session 4 – 11 June 2020, 9am to 12pm (GMT +8): Creating an Emergent Learning Environment
- The aesthetics and the learning environment
- Organization of the learning environment
- Based on children’s interest and background experiences
- Flexible to accommodate spontaneous interests and experiences
Trainer’s Profile
Dr. Crowther has been involved in in-service training, on site, at conferences and workshops both nationally and internationally. She has presented in urban, rural and isolated jurisdictions across Canada. The focus of these presentations has been to improve individualized sustainable, quality of childcare services for early childhood professionals.
She has published numerous textbooks and articles in association newsletters and other professional journals. Current publications include concept books that bridge the gap between theory and practice. She writes articles and concept books based on client demand. Dr. Crowther also publishes resource books and support materials on demand.
Methodology
This workshop demonstrates principles of emergent curriculum to foster greater understanding and practice of emergent learning.

This workshop is designed for all teachers and other adults who work in early years settings – early childhood and early primary grades.
