The Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education has received world-wide recognition as being one of the best programs for young children and their development. Focusing on observation, documentation and learning provocations, early childhood and elementary educators alike will have the opportunity to unpack their individual beliefs about how we capture the learning journeys of children, while exploring the Reggio Emilia philosophy.
Objectives
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the history of the Reggio Emilia approach and it’s foundation
- Analyze the principles of documentation and the environment and use them to guide and extend the children’s interests through learning provocations
- Reflect on current documentation practices and develop new strategies for making learning visible and re-knowable
- Explore thoughtful tools and materials to create meaningful learning provocations (invitations to learn) with the 100 Languages in mind
- Have tools and ideas to develop learning provocations and develop ways to extend and deepen learning
Outline
Session 1: Observation & Documentation
- An introduction to the Reggio Emilia approach for teaching and learning
- Analyzing the principle of Documentation in the context of your own school, culture and community
- Understanding the “Language of Documentation”, forms of documentation and intended audiences
Session 2: Planning & Provocations
- Analyzing the Reggio principles of the 100 Languages and the Environment, and how both honor children and value their learning
- Developing learning provocations and how to make them more meaningful
- Examining your current planning and assessment practices, and how to use observation and documentation to curate learning provocations that follow children’s interests
Trainer’s Profile
Logan Z. is an early childhood and elementary educator with experience teaching in the United States, Ireland and China. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development and Family Studies and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. Growing up in the mountains of Colorado, USA, Logan has a passion for exploration and the outdoors; both playing a role in her educational pedagogy. After attending the Reggio Emilia International Study Group in Italy, Logan’s passions for inquiry based and child centered learning were ignited. She has since collaborated with educators across the globe to develop their philosophies, and to create beautiful learning environments through the Reggio Emilia approach.
Methodology
This workshop will provide opportunities to reflect on current practices, to ask questions and engage in meaningful discussions, and to collaborate with other participants through hands-on activities.
