Overview
The theory of multiple intelligences (MIT) as developed by Howard Gardner can build awareness of the multiple ways to learn. Gardner identified eight intelligences over thirty years ago including musical–rhythmic,  visual–spatial, verbal–linguistic,  logical–mathematical,  bodily-kinaesthetic,    interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalistic, later suggesting that existential  intelligence be added. In this two-day workshop you will be given an introduction to the theory, the  practical applications and many benefits. Knowing your own dominant intelligence as well as  those of your students and colleagues will help increase overall effectiveness and motivation. You will be invited to experience the different ways of knowing with opportunities to draw, build, reflect, talk, write, sing, analyze, interact, think deeply, move and connect to nature. Multiple intelligence theory will support your continued growth as an educator and reflective practitioner. You will be given many ways to stay connected and updated on current research and resources related to multiple intelligence theory and practice. In addition, to short presentations with video and images, participants will have time to work together to experience the many intelligences and ways of knowing.  At the end of the two days, participants will be familiar with the theory and how it applies to practice.

Objectives
Upon successful completion of the workshop, the participants will be able to:

  • Assess and reflect on your own dominant way of knowing by taking the test and discussing the outcome with others
  • Learn ways to apply multiple intelligence theory in the classroom and workplace by reflecting on case studies and scenarios
  • Develop lesson that incorporate multiple intelligences using sample templates and group created plans.
  • Increase your awareness of resources, research and opportunities to share and collaborate through the use of social media
  • Explore ways of reaching and motivating all learners by relating the multiple intelligences amongst the participants to those that might be evident in the classroom.

  • Introduction to the Multiple Intelligence Theory (MIT)
  • Background of MIT– W5 and How of MIT
  • MIT and Learning Styles – what is the difference?
  • Definitions – Nine Intelligences
  • Assessing Our Own Multiple Intelligence (Ways of Knowing)
  • Three Corners Exercise – Analytic, Introspective and Interactive
  • One-Minute Review of the Day

Day 2:

  • Review of Day One
  • Identifying Children’s Ways of Knowing – presentation on MIT and children
  • Applying MIT to Practice – the Role of the Teacher – reflecting on case studies
  • Using MIT with Learners – applying scenarios
  • Lesson Planning Exercise – creating specific lessons according to the intelligences
  • Documenting Ways of Knowing Exercise – using technology to document – making learning visible – discussion on Howard Gardner’s work with Project Zero
  • Accessing Resources and Research – showcasing social media – Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest
  • One-Minute Review of the Day

Trainer’s Profile
Dr  Diane Kashin is a professor at Ryerson University in Ontario, Canada. Diane’s background is in early childhood education. Diane has offered multiple professional learning experiences, has provided on-site consultation to schools and programs and is an experienced adult educator. In 2009, Diane’s doctoral dissertation on Reggio-inspired curriculum was published. Diane has also published two academic, peer-reviewed articles and two early childhood education textbooks with co-author Beverlie Dietze. Diane is committed to the use of social media as a tool of professional learning.

Methodology
This two-day workshop   comprising of many opportunities for experiential and collaborative hands-on learning opportunities is built upon the principles of constructivist theory. Participants will have the opportunity to be fully engaged, interact with colleagues, reflect on, and document their learning in an environment that is supportive of multiple ways of knowing helping educators build their professional knowledge base about practice and theory.
