Behaviour is a communication. To change the communication we must change the environment. Developing a positive approach to behaviour supports children emerging self-regulation skills and coping strategies, their ability to build strong relationships and to be ready for learning.
Objectives
Upon successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the behaviour of children
- Promote positive behaviour and wellbeing within the early years
- Understand social emotional and mental health needs in children
- Explore children’s behaviour and what it is trying to tell us
- Consider links between promoting emotional wellbeing, mental health and positive behaviour
- Implement strategies to help offer the optimum environment for positive behaviour, wellbeing and social and emotional development

Day 1: Understanding behaviour
- The uniqueness of individual children
- Managing expectations
- Behaviour is a communication – what are they trying to say?
- The importance of building relationships – getting it right from the start
- An introduction to Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning
Day 2: Strategies to support positive behaviour
- Universal support for developing the wellbeing of children
- Developing positive behaviour
- Targeted and personalised support
- Action planning – moving forward and planning ahead
Trainer’s Profile
Sarah C. has been in education for over 20 years and has a Masters in Educational Leadership. She has had four headships and worked as Deputy CEO for Diocese of Ely Multi Academy Trust with 34 schools.
Sarah has experience and training skills across all areas of the primary phase with focus in EYFS practice. Her knowledge of inclusion is extensive offering practical solutions having worked and led in many settings. Sarah led a team of internal experts and working with consultants that trained headteachers on all elements of the curriculum, SEN and assessment. Her focus was leadership and operational management to ensure continuity of provision across early years into KS1 and KS2 and inclusion across a school.

- Use of a range of materials including film clips and articles
- Relating to the practitioner’s skills, knowledge and experience
- Practical activities to develop new skills and knowledge
- Discussion sessions to share good practice and work through solutions
