Children today are exhibiting more and more challenging behaviors that many teachers in preschool and primary settings feel ill equipped to handle. Utilizing proven practices, current research, scientifically based programs and practical strategies, this workshop is essential for all of those who work with young children today.  To meet the needs of teachers, parents, care-providers for children ages 2-8, this workshop offers a unique professional development opportunity in a two-day, interactive, solution-focused format that systematically deals with solving challenging behaviors.

Objectives
Upon successful completion of the workshop, the participants will:

  • Be skilled at solving 85% of minor misbehaviours by using proactive response styles and proven interventions that keep minor behaviours minor.
  • Implement a classroom management plan that avoids potentially problematic behaviours from occurring and creates a positive classroom climate
  • Be able to develop and implement a plan to intervene successfully with the top 15% of problematic behaviours
  • Be skilled at analyzing the continuum of normal development of young children’s behaviour in light of emotional, maturational or social difficulties.
  • Foster student independence through self-discipline and positive behavioural support strategies
  • Be able to recognize and identify potentially problematic behaviors.
  • Have dozens of practical strategies, proven interventions, resources for working with behavioural issues and social skills deficits of young children.
  • Utilize a formula that distinguishes short-term developmental delays and immaturity from more serious mental health issues.
  • Be skillful at determining whether concerns are fundamentally behavioural, social or emotional in nature.
  • Be able to utilize social-emotional-behavioral checklists and research-based programs with success.
  • Be skilled in writing and implementing effective management plans that address prevention, teaching, monitoring and evaluating challenging behaviors.
  • Understand the impact of the family issues, developmental progress, cultural issues and socio-economic status on the behaviours.
  • Learn successful and practical strategies for conferencing with parents of young children
  • Be able to navigate free internet resources that will solve behavioural issues with the click of a key.
  • Be able to examine the behaviors in light of known, abuse, loss, trauma or developmental levels.
  • Develop and implement a simple individual behaviour improvement plan that is defensible, utilizes best practices and has been proven effective with countless young children.

Trainer’s Profile
Kathryn is an internationally recognized presenter, consultant and author with more than 30 years of experience in education.  Her background includes teaching at all levels – preschool through university, behavioural and academic consultation, staff development and strategic planning for schools in working with special needs students.

Kathryn is a published author, consults with more than 100 school districts throughout North America each year as well as the ministry of education in the US. She speaks to more than 150 audiences a year and has trained over 14,000 educators in the last five years.   She has published nine books school professionals, including Successful Strategies for Working with Challenging Elementary School Children, A Smooth Ride: Management for Bus Drivers and Ideas that Work for Students with Sensory Processing Disorders. She is also the commentator on a full length DVD produced by the United States Bureau of Education and Research. She has made several radio and television appearances throughout the United States regarding a variety of current issues in education.

Kathryn has been providing workshops on learning issues for special needs students for over 30 years.  Her expertise of the content area is interwoven with videos, group activities, story telling, humour, and a plethora of practical strategies with hands-on examples.  A skillful educator, Kathryn recognizes that adult learners require a multi-modality approach with real life experiences, opportunities to practice and timely topic

Methodology
Multi-modality format including real life videos, role-plays, small group activities, slide presentations, individual reflection, case studies, and activity based instruction.  Humor, reflection, question-answer opportunities are specifically formulated to meet the unique needs of adult learners. Kathryn’s extensive resource manual “Assessing Behaviour in Children: Solving Behaviours in Early Childhood Settings” is the format for the workshop.
