Exploring the Reggio Emilia Approach (Advanced)

  Overview

This advanced workshop is designed for teachers and caregivers who have completed an introductory course or workshop on the principle, philosophy and theories behind the Reggio Emilia Approach or have participated in a Reggio study tour and have some experience implementing the philosophy with children in their classrooms.  

This workshop will highlight how the principles and practices are implemented in an Infant and toddler (0-3), preschool (3-4) and kindergarten classrooms (5 years) classrooms and the school environment. Special focus will be on implementing the emergent curriculum and documentation in a standard–based context.

 
  Objectives
At the end of the workshop, participants will:
  • Review their current understanding and experience with the Reggio  Emilia Approach
  • Learn new planning and teaching strategies to extend their experience
  • Plan further more extended in-depth project and documentation of children’s work
  • Gain an understanding of the philosophy, social and theory that underpins emergent curriculum and the environment that supports that
  • Leave with assessment strategies to evaluate documentation
 
  Outline
Day 1: Revisitation
  • Review of the Principles of the Reggio Emilia Approach
  • Theory: Piaget, Vygotsky Socio-Constructivist, multiple intelligences, emotional intelligence, creativity, and brain research
  • Implementation of Principles of the Reggio Emilia Approach
Day 2: Reflective Practice
  • Review of samples of documentation of children's work from participants' classrooms
  • Challenges in light of theoretical perspectives and reflection
  • Strategies to apply to overcome challenges
Day 3: Collaborative Planning
  • Learning objectives and short term plans
  • Developing long-term plans for future projects
  • Classroom organization and management
  Trainer's Profile
Dr. N.E is a tenured Professor of Early Childhood Education at Aquinas College. She teaches courses in early childhood, human development and general education. She has been involved in teaching and learning about the Reggio Emilia approach for many years in her work with pre-service teachers, teacher, young children and families. She did her doctoral dissertation on the Reggio Emilia approach. She has taught at various levels of early childhood classrooms, set up program, serves as adult and parent educator and early childhood consultant. For the past 12 years, she has conducted many professional development courses for teachers and parents throughout the States, Singapore, Japan, India, Dubai and Australia.

She completed Ed.D in Child and Youth Studies with specialization in Curriculum Development and Systemic Change from Nova Southeastern University...

She was one of the US delegates to Reggio Emilia, Italy and a panelist on the Oxford University Early Literacy Round Table. Her research interests include curriculum development, teacher’s professional development, culture & literacy development and brain development.

 
  Pre-requisites/Target Audience

Participants should have:

  • Good understanding of the following theories: Piaget’s Cognitive Development, Vygotsky Socio-Constructivist, multiple intelligences, emotional intelligence, creativity, and brain research
  • Taken the first workshop Exploring the Reggio Emilia Approach conducted by Dr Nkechy Ezeh or participated in a Reggio Emilia Study Tour
  • Done some work with the principles of Reggio Emilia Approach in their own classrooms and be prepared and open to examine their practice
  • Bring to the workshop full documentation of projects carried out in their own classroom (one tri-fold display board)
