This
workshop will provide teachers with useful knowledge and
effective strategies to improve the teaching of reading,
writing, listening, speaking and viewing skills. We
will focus on your community of learners and use
research-based approaches to develop meaningful,
functional and lively activities that encourage language
and language arts growth. This workshop also
acknowledges the importance of digital technology in
students’ lives and will offer literacy practices that
teach learners to access, analyze, evaluate, and utilize
those technologies in inventive ways. |

| At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to: |
- Identify the unique literacy demands on the
current generation of children
- Integrate the Language Arts into classroom
practice to engage and motivate learners
- Use children’s literature, including
multicultural literature, to improve reading,
writing, listening and speaking skills
- Include exceptional learners into all aspects
of the literacy program
- Use effective literacy strategies to teach all
the subjects in the curriculum
- Check for understanding and collect evidence
of student learning
- Effectively use research based classroom
practice to teach word study, fluency, vocabulary
and comprehension skills
- Participate in co-planning activities with
learning teams to ensure program sustainability
- Access professional development materials for
highly successful literacy teaching

| Day 1 |
|
The
workshop will begin with a discussion of what are
the Language Arts and why we should pay careful
attention to them in our classrooms. This discussion
and presentation will include:
- Critical factors that influence progress
- Language Arts across the curriculum
- Assessment of progress as a direction for
instruction
- Collection of evidence of student learning

| Day 2 |
|
The emphasis of this day will be on the use of
children’s literature, in particular, multicultural
children’s literature, to teach the Language Arts.
These meaningful and enriching books will be the
focus for :
- Presentation of classroom procedures, such as
the creation of story-maps and story boards
- Reinforcement of story concepts, such as
character development and point of view
- Teaching of strategies and skills, such as
prediction and character dialogue
- Improving spelling, grammar, vocabulary,
poetry, writing, speaking and listening skills
Within
this focus on children’s literature, methods to
support the inclusion of special needs learners and
linguistically diverse students into Language Arts
studies will be presented.

| Day 3 |
|
This day
will focus on Language Arts and the new literacies.
We will examine:
- the navigation of websites
- the use of multimedia for communication
- approaches to synthesizing information
- methods to critically evaluate online
resources
Activities to be approached include:
- digital storytelling
- Webquests
- blogging
In the
wrap-up session we will integrate the approaches
that we have been discussing in the workshop in
relation to:
- sustainability
- co-teaching
- coaching
- networking
- special interest groups
- professional association groups in the
Language Arts

Dr. Honey
Halpern is a well respected teacher with many years
of teaching experience in elementary, secondary and
universities. She works as a literacy consultant and
a lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the
University of British Columbia. Her courses include
“Teaching Language Arts in the Elementary School”
and “Language Across the Curriculum in Multilingual
Secondary Classrooms”. Recently she has worked as a
consultant for the International School in Dar Es
Salaam, Tanzania.
Her Master’s in Education
degree from McGill University and Doctorate from the
University of British Columbia are both in Reading
Education. Her commitment to good teaching practice
is demonstrated through her participation in
professional associations. She is an active member
of the editorial board of The Reading Teacher,
is on the Executive of the British Columbia Literacy
Council of the International Reading Association,
and chairs the BC Exemplary Reading Award Program. |
This
workshop invite teachers to ask questions and
participate in their learning through shoulder to
shoulder talk, problem solving in small groups and
trying out some of the newly presented strategies.
Participants are encouraged to share the
challenges faced in the classrooms and trainer
will attempt to address these issues through this
workshop. To make sure that everyone acquires the
necessary background knowledge to understand the
rationale for the new approaches, a combination of
Power Point presentations, YouTube videos and
informal explanation in response to the specific
needs of the participants will be used.

workshop is designed for Language Arts instruction
of children aged 5- 12.
This workshop will be of
interest to pre-service teachers, classroom
teachers, resource teachers, librarians,
administrators, curriculum consultants, special
education teachers, and teaching coaches. |
