Join us in this engaging and invigorating workshop for teachers who want to meet the needs of ALL learners with the best and most practical ideas in implementing tiered assignments, rubrics, identifying readiness levels, student interests and learning styles, responding to multiple intelligences and multi-modality outcomes, utilizing flexible grouping and documenting with short-cycle assessments. Participants leave this workshop with countless ideas for expanding upon and meeting the needs of all learners. This two-day workshop is pack with simple practical ideas, free resources, learning management ideas and dozens of effective ways to differentiate instruction. Participants have the opportunity to experience the techniques discussed throughout this workshop. Videos, simulated activities, demonstration, small group activities, individual interest inventories and readiness surveys as well as rubrics and matrices will help you prepare your own lesson/unit to be used immediately! 
 
  Objectives
Upon successful completion of the workshop, the participants will:
  • Be able clarify essential learning goals in content areas and units

  • Understand and be able to describe, identify, and utilize the nine components of differentiated instruction

  • Have dozens of ideas, resources, and systems for differentiating in the general education setting

  • Have ideas for setting up classroom environments that are conducive to and enhance differentiated instruction

  • Learn ways for differentiating whole class lessons with multi-modality learning

  • Be able to use readiness inventories, and learning needs assessments for student planning

  • Develop a keen understanding of outcome variations addressing multiple intelligences

  • Be able to develop a rubric as a scoring matrix for independent projects

  • Develop a tiered learning assignment for a content unit*

  • Participate in interactive exercises intended for flexible grouping and multi-modality learning lessons

  • Develop simple accommodations and modifications for practical use in the general education classroom that meet the needs of different learning styles

  • Be able to access a myriad of online and printed resources for implementing differentiated instruction strategies

  • Experience differentiated materials, student lessons, and activities to “make and take away”.

  • Understand the role of short-cycle assessments, formative assessment and readiness assessments for unit development, lesson planning and monitoring progress.

  • Create a short-cycle assessment for content areas and check for understanding *

  • Learn simple ways to create small flexible groups

  • Learn practical ways to teach independent work behaviours through student choice menus

  • Learn ways for teaching students self-monitoring and self-assessment on individual projects, rubrics, choice and tiered assignments

*Participants are encouraged to bring a sample of a unit from their own setting to practice this objective

  Trainer's Profile
Kathryn is an internationally recognized presenter, consultant and author with more than 30 years of experience in education.  Her background includes preschool and primary teaching, assessment and diagnosis of emotional and behavioural disorders in young children, staff development and strategic planning for schools in behaviour management.

Kathryn is a published author, previous university professor, and current behavioural consultant to more than 100 school districts throughout North America each year. She speaks to more than 150 audiences a year and has trained over 14,000 educators in the last five years.   She has published nine books on behaviour management for school professionals, including Successful Strategies for Working with Challenging Elementary School Children,  The Ultimate Playground Guide, and Ideas that Work for Students with Sensory Processing Disorders.  She is also the commentator on a full length DVD produced by the United States Bureau of Education and Research. She has made several radio and television appearances throughout the United States regarding a variety of current issues in education.  

Kathryn has been providing workshops on early childhood behavioural issues for over 30 years.  Her expertise of the content area is interwoven with small group activities, story telling, humour, and a plethora of practical strategies with hands-on examples.  A skillful educator, Kathryn recognizes that adult learners require a multi-modality approach with real life experiences, opportunities to practice and timely topics.

  Methodology

Multi-modality format including real life videos, small and large group activities, slide presentations, individual reflection and consultation, and activity-based instruction.  Humour, reflection, question-answer opportunities are specifically formulated to meet the unique needs of adult learners.
